Kingston Symphony to Premiere Grammy-Nominated “Journey” Soundtrack

The Kingston Symphony, in collaboration with Isabel Voices, will present the live concert premiere of “Traveler – A Journey Symphony” on October 26 and 27, 2024. This performance marks the first time the Grammy-nominated soundtrack from the critically acclaimed video game Journey will be performed in concert. The concerts will take place at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

The concert program will feature the symphonic re-arrangement of the original video game score, composed by Austin Wintory. Wintory, known for his work on video game titles such as Flow, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, and The Banner Saga, received significant recognition for his composition for Journey. His score for the 2012 PlayStation game made history as the first and only video game soundtrack to be nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.

In 2022, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Journey, Wintory re-imagined the score into a symphonic suite titled “Traveler – A Journey Symphony.” This new arrangement expands the original composition, increasing the number of musicians from around 30 to 130, and enhancing the work with additional vocalists. The piece follows the journey of the game’s protagonist, the Traveler, from the beginning of their voyage to their apotheosis, maintaining the emotional depth and narrative essence of the original soundtrack.

In addition to Wintory’s symphony, the Kingston Symphony will also perform Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet and Fanfare, a composition by Jordan Pal written in celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial.

Tickets for the performances are available at the Kingston Symphony’s website or by calling 613-530-2050
