The Great Outdoors

It was recently announced that Kevin Hart will star in a Universal remake of the 1988 comedy ‘The Great Outdoors’ that starred the late, great John Candy and local area resident Dan Aykroyd.

The original film featured Candy as ‘Chet Ripley’, a man planning to have a peaceful vacation in the woods with his wife and kids. But Chet’s good times come to an abrupt end when his annoying in-laws, including Dan Aykroyd as ‘Roman Craig’, unexpectedly show up.

The Great Outdoors went on to become one of the top 25 box office hits of 1988 and the #8 PG Rated film of the year, according to Box Office Mojo.

The Aykroyd & Candy film was written by the legendary John Hughes, and Deadline Hollywood reports the Kevin Hart reboot is being written by Randall Green – who has also been tasked to write the script for an upcoming Scooby Doo live action film.

The IMDB page lists Kevin Hart’s The Great Outdoors as “just announced” and he is the only actor named to the cast so far.  No word yet on whether local area resident Dan Aykroyd will have a cameo or supporting role in the film, as he did with his brief appearance in last year’s Ghostbusters reboot.

Next year marks the 30th anniversary of the original flick that’s also going to be the featured film at a “Movies in the Square” screening in downtown Kingston on June 29th.
