This month, the 25th Annual Gemini Awards announced the top 25 shows as voted on by TV lovers across Canada.

Canadians were able to make their choice between September 15 and November 3 at an interactive website set up for the vote – a first for the annual event.

Their first choice was the thirty year veteran, Degrassi – which began in 1980 and still airs today in both syndication and new episodes –  and second place went to the police show Flashpoint, which premiered in 2008 with its ensemble cast that includes Kingston born Hugh Dillon as the head SRU (Strategic Response Unit) sniper, Ed Lane.

The top 5 was rounded out with long time children’s favorite, Mr. Dressup (1967 – 1996); Anne of Green Gables (1985); and in fifth place was Durham County (2007 – Present), which also stars Hugh Dillon in his Gemini nominated role as a weary and tormented homicide detective.

Dillon’s entertainment career began as the lead singer for hard rock band The Headstones which formed in Kingston in 1987 and was one of the country’s most successful bands until their breakup in 2003.

This year, Flashpoint won a Gemini Award for Best Direction in a Dramatic Series and was nominated for:
