Queen’s University students have stepped up to share their passion for dance with the campus and Kingston communities by inviting them to a Flash Mob this Sunday, November 20.

“Queen’s is all about bringing people together,” says Crystal Lo, founder of STEP CREW and a fifth-year Concurrent Education student. “There weren’t a lot of opportunities at Queen’s for people to get involved in a dance crew that didn’t require a fee, audition or past dance experience so I was encouraged to establish STEP CREW.”

STEP CREW is in its second year and includes over 100 step and hip hop dancers. Everyone is invited to join for free with no audition or previous dance experience required.

The group has performed at charitable events around Queen’s University and the Kingston community,  and also offers weekly youth and adult dance classes at two YMCA locations in the city. STEP CREW is now developing a dance program for at-risk youth at Youth Diversion beginning this January.

STEP CREW will host a flash mob in front of Stauffer Library on Sunday at 3 pm.

According to a Queen’s University release, “Ms Lo’s parents instilled in her a strong belief that everyone should have an equal opportunity to grow and succeed in life, which helped form her vision for STEP CREW.

Her father, an orphan at the age of three in Taiwan, was sponsored by an American couple through World Vision. Ms Lo’s mom helped care for her four siblings growing up and wasn’t given many educational opportunities.”

STEP CREW is one of 17 finalists from universities across the country who are competing for a $4,000 scholarship in the Blackberry Messengers contest. If successful, this scholarship would be used to support a Queen’s student to build STEP CREW’s community dance program with Youth Diversion.

The second of three challenges in the Black Berry competition is to create a flash mob, which will take place this Sunday, November 20, outside Stauffer Library on Queen’s campus at 3pm.

STEP CREW would like to have as many students and Kingston community members involved as possible in order to impress the judges.

They have posted the Flash Mob on their Facebook events page with details about this flash mob and a video tutorial of the dance for people to practice their moves before Sunday.

Update: Photos of the Dance Crew flash mob can now be seen on the “Queen’s Life” blog.
