Kingstonians are excited today to be welcoming the cast and crew of Guillermo del Toro’s “Crimson Peak” (also known by its working title “Haunted Peak”) who are in town to shoot scenes outside City Hall.
The filming centers around the historic Market Square, behind City Hall, where tons of earth and 1900-era props have been used to turn back time.
Actress Mia Wasikowska, who starred in the title roles of both “Jane Eyre” and “Alice in Wonderland”, has been seen filming scenes but the other stars – Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam, and Tom Hiddleston – are less certain to appear, with Hiddleston having attended the Laurence Olivier Awards in London, England just last night.
Around 300 extras were hired for the shoot with filming slated to begin at 7am this morning.
The Springer Market Square has been the scene of a number of key moments in Canada’s history since it was informally established in 1788, and used for other studio shoots in the recent past.
In January of 2013, the WB television series “Nikita” transformed the same part of Kingston to shoot scenes set in Russia and the 1999 HBO movie Vendetta, starring Christopher Walken, turned the Market Square area into 1890s New Orleans.
Crimson Peak is scheduled to be released on October 16, 2015.
