Conductor Dr. Jamie Hillman to Lead Cantabile Choirs in Celebration of Canadian Multicultural Music

Cantabile Choirs is kicking off the 2023 season with a tribute to Canadian choral music, led by renowned conductor, Dr. Jamie Hillman. The concert, called “Canadiana,” will showcase exclusively Canadian compositions and pay homage to the country’s diverse cultural heritage.

The concert will feature pieces by composers of all backgrounds, including Cree-Dene ancestry and Malaysian-Canadian heritage. In addition, the performance will include the winning piece from Cantabile’s 2022 BIPOC Song Competition, “River Snow,” composed by Chinese-Canadian Qiushi Jiang.

Dr. Jamie Hillman is considered one of Canada’s top choral artists, and is active as a conductor, singer, pianist, music educator, and composer. He holds the Elmer Iseler Chair in Conducting at the University of Toronto and serves as Director of Choral Studies and an Associate Professor. He will be joining Cantabile for a one-week conducting residency and working with the choir’s youth and adult groups.

Founded in 1996, Cantabile Choirs has grown to offer a range of musical education and performance opportunities for singers of all ages. The organization aims to reduce barriers to the performing arts by providing bursaries, rehearsing and performing in accessible spaces, and creating an inclusive environment for all individuals. The organization has received recognition for its artistry and innovation, and its performances regularly sell out.

Canadiana will take place on Saturday, February 25th at The Spire in Kingston. Seating is reserved and tickets are on sale now.

The residency of Dr. Jamie Hillman is supported by funding from the Community Foundation for Kingston & Area, and the concert is sponsored by Gordon’s Downsizing and Estate Services Ltd., Brokerage.
