Avril Lavigne Partners With Online Shoppers to Raise Funds for Charity

Just in time for the holiday shopping season, Avril Lavigne announced that she is utilizing a free browser app that enables fans to raise money for her children’s charity foundation.

Launched the weekend before Cyber Monday – one of the biggest online shopping days of the year – the ‘Giving Assistant’ app enables funds to be raised for charity with just a couple of clicks of the mouse while shopping at participating websites.

The app works on desktop or laptop computers and is available for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Internet Explorer browsers.

After installing the app, a notification bar appears at the top of the browser screen when users visit one of the participating shopping sites – including Amazon, Best Buy, The Gap, and Staples – as well as displaying a star icon beside those sites in Google search results.

When the user chooses to buy a product there, they pay exactly the same amount as every other shopper, but a portion of their purchase can go towards The Avril Lavigne Foundation when they click on a ‘Make It Count‘ icon.

Once clicked, the icon turns to a ‘thank you‘ message to inform users that a donation will be made on their behalf towards the charity – for example, purchasing a Kindle from Amazon.com would raise $5 for the Avril Lavigne Foundation.

You can view the video embedded below for more details about this simple process.

Users of the app can also track how much they raised for the Foundation by using the dashboard feature on The Giving Assistant.

The charity is offering chances to win prizes by collecting points through purchases and by spreading the word to friends and family, with a special Avril prize pack available to participating shoppers this month.

The Avril Lavigne Foundation was established in 2010 by the singer-songwriter, who grew up just outside Kingston in Napanee, Ontario. It raises awareness, creates programs, and supports children and youth living with a serious illness or disability. The foundation has partnered with Easter Seals, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the Nancy Davis Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis to achieve those goals.
