Kingston-Built Bombardier Trains Arriving in B.C.

According to Vancity Buzz, the first Bombardier Innovia Metro 300 train cars for the Vancouver SkyTrain system have begun to arrive in Burnaby, BC.

A total of seven trains, equaling 28 cars, were ordered by TransLink in 2012 for $90.7-million to expand the fleet’s capacity.

According to TransLink, four cars were built at the Bombardier plant here in Kingston and are being shipped to B.C. on flatbed trucks. The cars will then be assembled into four-car trains “with the addition of accordion-style gangways to connect the cars, allowing passengers to walk from one end of the train to other while also providing a greater capacity.”

However, considerable testing will be performed on the cars before these new trains will go into service.

“Once assembled, these trains need to complete a comprehensive testing program before being placed into service,” TransLink media relations manager, Cheryl Ziola, told Vancity Buzz. “This typically takes several months. When testing is done, we can confirm when trains will be in service.”

The new trains will be more spacious than the older models with larger open spaces available for bikes, strollers and wheelchairs.
