Opening August 23 In Newly Renovated Engineerium

The Pump House Steam Museum is proud to present a visiting exhibit entitled ‘The Vikings: Master Mariners, Traders, Colonists and Artisans’, running August 23 to December 1, 2012 in the newly renovated Engineerium Space at the Museum.

Vikings have long been the victims of bad press: Since the year 789, English and Irish histories have focused on one limited and negative aspect of Viking history – their early raids on monasteries and coastal cities. The image of Vikings as bloodthirsty barbarians has been perpetuated over the centuries.

‘The Vikings: Master Mariners, Traders, Colonists and Artisans’ is a visiting exhibition from the Manitoba Museum that addresses the issue of stereotypes associated with Vikings. Using archaeological evidence of Viking activities in North America and Europe from 780 to 1100 to dispel the derogatory stereotypes and replace Hollywood’s damaging portrayal with the truth.

The exhibition includes text, illustrations, and artifact replicas from numerous Viking sites in Scandinavia, Greenland, Iceland and the temporary settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows, in Newfoundland, coupled with items from Inuit camps in Canada’s high Arctic islands.
