Use Your Smartphone to Send a Child to Summer Camp

Sending a disadvantaged kid in KFL&A to summer camp now as easy as picking up your smart phone.

Every child deserves an active, outdoor Summer, but hundreds of the most disadvantaged children in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington don’t get that opportunity.

Now, helping them go to Summer camp is as close as your smart phone thanks to a new text-based fundraising campaign by Family and Children’s Services.

“A recent report by Participaction gave Canadian children a D minus for overall physical activity. The children we serve are no different, and, perhaps, face an even greater challenge because of the barriers they experience. Many of them have never been to Summer camp, and if we don’t help them, they never will get to go,” said Steve Woodman, Executive Director of Family and Children’s Services of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington.

Starting today and running throughout July anyone with a smart phone will be able to make a donation to the Give A Kid Summer Campaign by texting. All you have to do is text “summer” to 45678 to donate up to $20.00.

The donation will show up on their phone bill from Bell, Fido, Koodo Mobile, Rogers, Solo Mobile, TELUS, Videotron, Virgin Mobile or WIND Mobile.

“This is a really simple way to help disadvantaged kids in our community. The power to help is right in the palm of your hand,” said Woodman.

Last year, Family and Children’s Services sent more than 60 kids to camps across Frontenac, Lennox and Addington.

Summer camp services for kids who are not in care of the Children’s Aid Society are not covered by government funding. The Agency relies on donations to help. Last year, donors contributed $15,000 to the Summer camp program.
