Symposium to Expose Students to Opportunities in the Arts

Published on: 2010/10/22 - in Releases

‘Art Works’ is symposium designed to expose students in the Limestone District School Board to specialized skills and post secondary opportunities in the Arts.  Secondary students enrolled in the Board’s Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in the Arts and Culture Program will attend the October 28, 2010 symposium at Queen’s University – Faculty of Education.

The SHSM program allows Limestone students to participate in art related workshops led by artists from a variety of disciplines. This grassroots approach will help to nurture and educate young people for the realities of a life devoted to the Arts. For some students this may lead to a chance to appear in the spotlight, and for others this may mean an opportunity to run that spotlight.

Workshops will focus on five disciplines: Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Dance and Technical; and include topics such as sound engineering and recording, song writing, musical theatre, puppet making and improvisation, to name a few. The presenters are both local and national artists including David Row (Kingston native who was a puppet creator for the television show ‘Fraggle Rock’) and Trevor Strong (The Arrogant Worms).

The Specialist High Skills Major in the Arts and Culture Program is offered at six LDSB secondary schools: QECVI, LCVI, KCVI, LaSalle SS, Frontenac SS, and Bayridge SS.
