Queen’s University AMS Food Centre Launches Food Drive

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) Food Centre at Queen’s University is launching a food drive next week.

“We see the food drive as an opportunity to increase our capacity to support students while raising our visibility on campus,” says Laura Stairs, Director (photo left, with volunteer Mark Tremblay), AMS Food Centre.

The AMS Food Centre offers confidential, non-judgmental food service to members of the Queen’s community. Volunteers also work to address the underlying causes of poverty through campus education and advocacy.

Queen’s undergraduate and graduate student fees and donations support the operation of the non-profit organization located in the MacGillivray-Brown Hall.

Although there has been a recent increase in students turning to the AMS Food Centre for fresh, healthy food items, Ms Stairs believes even more students would access the service if they knew about it and if there was no stigma around using food banks.

The food drive organizers aim to engage students as well as faculty and staff members. Volunteers will deliver donation boxes to offices around campus. People can also drop off non-perishable food items and monetary donations outside the AMS office on the lower ceilidh of the John Deutsch University Centre.
