Queen’s alumna and former administrator Ann Tierney will become the university’s next Associate Vice-Principal and Dean of Student Affairs, effective July 1, 2011.

Ms Tierney, an accomplished lawyer, was Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1999-2004. She also served as an adjunct sessional instructor and as director of the Faculty’s Career Services Office. She graduated from Queen’s with a Bachelor of Laws in 1989 and was called to the Bar for the Province of Ontario. She also holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Queen’s, which she received in 2004.

“I am delighted to be returning to Queen’s where I had a wonderful experience both as a student and during my time working at the Faculty of Law,” says Ms. Tierney. “Queen’s is well known for providing students with an excellent academic and student life experience, and I feel privileged to be given the opportunity to lead the student affairs portfolio. I am very much looking forward to working with the students, faculty and staff at Queen’s.”

Ms Tierney is currently Vice-Provost (Students) at the University of Calgary where, as a member of the executive leadership team, she is responsible for providing leadership for a comprehensive range of learning support and student services to promote student development and enhance the student experience.

“It is an honour to welcome Ann back to Queen’s,” says Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) Bob Silverman. “Ann is an accomplished administrator who will bring a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience to the role of Associate Vice-Principal and Dean of Student Affairs.”

Ms Tierney’s accomplishments at the University of Calgary include the establishment of the Student Success Centre, the Centre for Community Engaged Learning and chairing the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) Action Team.

The student affairs portfolio includes university residences, career services, hospitality services, and health counseling and disability services. The Associate Vice-Principal and Dean of Student Affairs also works collaboratively with the Alma Mater Society, the Society of Graduate and Professional Students, faculty student governments, clubs, and organizations to assist them in advancing the programs and services they provide to members of the Queen’s community.

John Pierce has been in the role in an interim capacity since August 1, 2010.

“On behalf of the University, I would like to express the utmost appreciation to Dr. Pierce for his dedicated service to both the Student Affairs portfolio and the university during his time in this role,” says Dr. Silverman. “He has shown a remarkable commitment to engaging and supporting students in all aspects of the university.”
