Queen’s University Releases Commission on Mental Health Final Report

After a year-long process based on wide-ranging input from the university and broader communities, the Principal’s Commission on Mental Health at Queen’s University has released its final report.

“The report makes more than 100 recommendations within a framework for a university mental health strategy,” says commission chair David Walker. “The commissioners would like to thank the students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, mental health professionals and community members who generously gave their time to provide valuable insight that is reflected in our report.”

The commission has developed a four-level pyramidal framework that includes 116 recommendations for promoting a healthy community, easing transitions and fostering resilience, encouraging help-seeking and helping behavior and providing effective response, service and care. Some will take significant time to achieve; others are already in progress or in place. The Office of the Provost will provide leadership for further implementation of the report’s recommendations.

“I am tremendously pleased with the report the commission has submitted,” says Queen’s Principal Daniel Woolf. “Many of the recommendations are things we have already begun work on, while others give us a positive direction for the future. I want to thank the commission members for all of their hard work in carrying out this significant and important task as well as those who spoke or wrote to the commission about their experiences and ideas.”

The commission was established by Dr. Woolf in September 2011 to assist the university in its ongoing efforts to be a proactive and responsive community that promotes every student’s success from the day they arrive through to graduation.

Also on the commission were Roy Jahchan, MPA ’11 / Law ’13, Lynann Clapham, Associate Dean (Academic), Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Ann Tierney, Vice-Provost and Dean of Student Affairs and Jennifer Medves, Vice-Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences and Director of the School of Nursing.
