Health Issues Photography Contest Offers XBox Kinect Prize

“Sometimes you need to go to the source to find the best message”. That’s the idea behind a new photography project and contest being run by six local public health agencies across eastern Ontario this fall until the end of November.

Photovoice, a program for youth between the ages of 10 and 24, is being organized by the Eastern Ontario Tobacco Control Area Network. Organizers — including the local KFL&A Public Health — are helping to give local youth a voice on health issues important to them by submitting photographs related to the project and a description of what the photo means to them.

One lucky winner will be rewarded for their effort with a new Xbox system with Kinect.

“We want to give youth a platform to talk about issues affecting their health using the power of photography,” said Nicole Szumlanski, public health nurse with KFL&A Public Health. “We all have very different opinions about what’s important when it comes to health and Photovoice gives youth a chance to highlight and explore the issues related to their health and what affects their well-being in the community.”

The contest launched in secondary schools and community agencies on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 and KFL&A Public Health is accepting entries until the end of November.

The idea is for youth to explore healthy living issues in their community, including tobacco prevention, mental health, injury prevention, healthy eating, oral health, physical activity, and substance misuse prevention. The project includes weekly draws for prizes including the grand prize Xbox with Kinect, and will conclude with a gala event featuring the photo submissions.
