The new elementary school now under construction in Greater Napanee will be named Southview Public School when it opens later this fall. Trustees with the Limestone District School Board decided on the name at its regular board meeting March 7.
The name for the new school, which consolidates H.H. Langford and Westdale Park Public Schools, was chosen from a short list of three. Greater Napanee Public School, Rose Bay Public School and Southview Public School were chosen by the New School Integration Committee from a field of 78 suggestions provided by students, parents, staff and community members.

“Southview represents the beauty of the region overlooking the Napanee River and town,” said Laurie French, the trustee who represents Greater Napanee. “Trustees were conscious to choose a name that reflects our school communities and we have it.”

Westdale Park Public School Principal Peter Mouncey, who will preside over the new Southview P.S., says the name gives students a chance to begin making the new school their own. “We’re so pleased to finally have our new name and new colours,” said Mouncey. “We’re excited to now turn our attention to getting a new crest and mascot to complement our new name. We’re really hoping the students and staff will embrace this opportunity to bring together the two school communities.”

Now that the new name has been chosen, work begins on a new crest and mascot. Blue and white have already been selected as the new school colours which are reflected in both H.H. Langford’s and Westdale’s current school crests.

Construction of the new, two-storey, 60,000-squre-foot facility is on schedule for a September 2012 opening.
