RELEASE — The City of Kingston wants your input on when and how often the new programmable lighting system being installed around City Hall should be used.

“Anyone who saw the live screening of The Tragically Hip concert last August got a good sense of the effect lighting can have to build excitement and create a sense of occasion that enriches a shared feeling of community,” says Colin Wiginton, cultural director.

Canada’s Sesquicentennial has provided an opportunity for the City to invest in a new, energy-efficient and programmable lighting system to showcase Kingston City Hall, Springer Market Square and the Confederation Fountain.

Your input will help to shape a new Illumination Policy that will provide guidelines on when the new lighting system will be used and for what purpose. Share your thoughts by completing an online survey or by attending a public meeting to be held on Monday, June 12 at 6 p.m. in Memorial Hall at City Hall, 216 Ontario St.

The online survey will be available until Friday, June 16 and the results of the survey, and the feedback received during the public meeting, will be used to develop the Illumination Policy to be approved by council in July 2017.

Installation and commissioning will take place in early June and residents may see staff working with equipment in and around the installation areas, as well as intermittent testing of the new system.

The City plans to use the new Sesquicentennial lighting system for the first time over the Canada Day weekend and, once it’s operational, Kingston will join the many cities around the world that use similar system to highlight historical buildings and promote important community events, celebrations and issues.
