LDSB Teacher Wins Provincial Teaching Award
Brian Robertson, a teacher with the Limestone District School Board, is this year’s elementary recipient of the OTIP Teaching Awards, organized by the Ontario Teachers’ Federation and funded by the Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan.
Mr. Robertson has consistently provided outstanding service to students at Land O’ Lakes Public School, well beyond the responsibilities and duties of an Elementary School Teacher. His colleagues, some who have worked with Brian for over 20 years, echo their support and belief that Brian truly is a remarkable educator who exemplifies professionalism and a love of teaching. Brian’s outstanding service to students is demonstrated through his teaching practice, his dedication and modelling of healthy living, respect for Canadian heritage, and instilling in each child a passion for the Arts.
He is the Core French Teacher at Land O’Lakes Public School and teaches Social Studies and Music to primary classes. Whether he is teaching French or other subject areas, Brian integrates hands on activities and the arts into as many activities as possible. Students are engaged and actively involved in each of the lessons. He easily makes accommodations or modifications to meet the needs of each child.
It is evident that one of his passions lies with the performing arts, another area in which he provides outstanding service to students. Each year he co-produces a school wide talent show and officiates the school’s Groundhog Day celebrations. In addition, he directs the annual spring musical and writes original scripts which provides an opportunity for each child who wants to participate. He voluntarily spends his lunch hours, weekends and evenings preparing and planning the musical. This annual production allows students to assist in all aspects of the production (set design, stage lighting, decorating, etc.)
Brian also organizes the school’s Remembrance Day ceremony, where students, staff and the entire community are involved.
One teacher in each of the following three categories: elementary, secondary, and beginning teacher, are selected each year from Ontario’s publicly funded schools, including public, Catholic, and Francophone school boards. Mr. Robertston wins $1000, and his school also receives a cheque for $1000.
