City of Kingston Seeks Input on Outdoor Rink Policy Draft

Published on: 2011/08/31 - in Releases

The City is seeking input on the policy that will set clear standards of operations for outdoor rinks.

A draft of the Outdoor Rinks Policy is posted for Your Opinion comment at www.cityofkingston.ca/outdoorrinks. The deadline for input is Monday, Sept. 12.

The Policy will establish guidelines for staffed and unstaffed municipally-run outdoor rinks – and for volunteer-run community outdoor rinks – in municipal parks.

“We want to adequately support the community in the operations of outdoor rinks,” says Lanie Hurdle, Commissioner of Community Services.

The draft Policy calls for Community Outdoor Rinks to be supported by a Volunteer Team of at least four adults, or by a group, association, club, or union. Such teams will need to go through a formal application process to ensure they understand and can fulfill the requirements of the Outdoor Rink Policy. The responsibilities of the Volunteer Team for operations of the Community Outdoor Rinks are detailed in the six-page draft Policy, which also outlines the kind of support and guidance the City will offer a Volunteer Team.

The draft Policy calls for outdoor rinks – unless otherwise determined – to be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily by the second week of January, as long as there is sufficient frost in the ground, closed the first week of March at the latest.
