Kingston Closures and Activities for Family Day

The City and some community partners are offering a variety of Family Day activities for Monday, February 21, 2011.

(The holiday schedule for municipal services follows the activity listing.)


FREE Family Day Public Skating: Local sponsors are partnering with the City to offer FREE public skating at the INVISTA Centre, 1350 Gardiners Rd.

  • 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. – Sponsored by The Whig, Rona, INVISTA, Swish and The Ambassador.
  • 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. – Sponsored by Braden Ford.

Family Members: join the Family Fit Challenge. Those with family memberships at the Fitness & Wellness Centre at the INVISTA Centre are invited to participate in the Family Fit Challenge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families can challenge other families in the Family Relay Circuit, Game Bike Car Rally and the 2000m Rowing Relay. Youth Members: bring a friend for free. Those with youth memberships at the Fitness & Wellness Centre are welcome to bring a friend for free to use the KIDZ Fit Zone games. Guests must complete a quick orientation and sign a waiver. Activities are restricted to the cardio games’ section only.


The Artillery Park Aquatics Centre, 76 Ordnance St., opens at noon on Monday offering the following Family Day activities:

  • 12 to 1:30 p.m.: Adult and Family Swim (two lanes)
  • 2 to 4 p.m.: Leisure Swim
  • 4 to 5 p.m.: Parent and Tot Swim
  • 5 to 6 p.m.: Swim to Survive, Drop-in Lessons
  • 6 to 7:30 p.m.: Toonie Swim – Adult and Family Swim (two lanes)
  • 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.: Aquafit


The Kingston Family YMCA, 100 Wright Cres., is partnering with the City to offer FREE Family Day activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. including:

  • 10 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.: recreational swimming, air castles and face-painting.
  • 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.: special guest story teller Jowl Taylor and his guitar built from pieces of Canadian heritage. See for details.

The Family Day holiday will create some schedule changes to important municipal services:

Administrative Offices: Closed Monday. All administrative offices, including social services and Utilities Kingston are closed on Monday. In the event of a utility emergency, such as a gas smell or a water main break, call the Utilities Kingston 24-hour number at 613-546-1181.

Kingston Transit: No bus service on Monday.

Green Bin, garbage and recycling: There is no collection on Monday. Monday’s collection moves to Tuesday, and for the rest of the week, collection occurs the day after the regular pick-up day.

Kingston Area Recycling Centre: Closed.

Provincial Offences Office: Closed.

Arenas: Open.

Libraries: All branches of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library will be closed on Sunday, Feb. 20 and Monday, Feb. 21.

Grand Theatre Box Office: Closed.

Portsmouth Olympic Harbour: Closed.

Wally Elmer Neighbourhood Centre: Open for skating from 3 to 5 p.m. only.

Oakwood Day Care: Closed.

Fitness & Wellness Centre at the INVISTA Centre: Open regular hours.

Artillery Park Aquatics Centre: Opens at noon on Monday.
