Business Development

Jennifer Baker, Business Advisor with The Entrepreneurship Centre at KEDCO attended The Garrison Expo on September 11, which provides an opportunity for newly posted-in members and their families as well as other members of the defense team to see what CFB Kingston, the City of Kingston and other community organizations have to offer.

The event, which ran from 11:00am – 4:00pm at the Kingston Military Community Sports Centre, attracted over 1,000 participants. Baker provided information on KEDCO services, resources for entrepreneurs and those interested in starting their own business, and information for military spouses on local employers currently recruiting.

Jeff Garrah- CEO, Christa Wallbridge– Project Manager, Business Development and Dean Byrnes– Board Director and President of Eikon Device Inc., are attending the Economic Developers Association of Canada’s (EDAC) Conference in Quebec City on September 18 – 21. This year’s conference focuses on innovation and creativity as key drivers of economic development.

Tourism Kingston

Tourism Kingston and Ultimate Canada are hosting the 2010 Canadian Eastern University Ultimate [Frisbee] Championships on September 18-19 at Woodbine Park, 1180 Woodbine Road.

The Queen’s University Ultimate team as well as the Kingston Ultimate Club will be supporting the event by assisting with planning, organization and providing volunteers. The tournament is projected to provide an economic impact of $125,000 according to the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance’s (CSTA) Sport Tourism Economic Assessment Model (STEAM).

Gary Kelly, Sport Tourism Manager met with the local bid committee who are preparing the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Sailing Championships bid for Kingston to host the 2014 championship event. The working committee invited representatives from Tourism Kingston, Downtown Kingston! BIA and KEDCO to discuss ideas for community programming around the event and bid development in general.

The pre-bid application is due early October. Pending acceptance of Kingston’s pre-bid, the formal bid will be submitted at the end of this year.
