HIGHLIGHTS OF RECENT PROGRESS & ACTIVITIES

Business Development

The Kingston Economic Development Corporation would like to congratulate all nominees for the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce Business Achievement Awards which were presented on November 4. KEDCO is especially pleased to highlight Mark Sherwin of First Capital Construction on his award for Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

Mark started his business, Husky Homes, through the Summer Company program in 2006. He has since served on The Entrepreneurship Centre at KEDCO’s Advisory Board and mentored Summer Company participants. Elizabeth Allen, Project Manager – Labour Market Development is working with SNC-Lavalin PAE to organize a career event for Thursday, December 1 at the Days Inn & Conference Centre, 33 Benson Street. SNC-Lavalin PAE is the main civilian support system for the Canadian mission in Kandahar. With the mission ending, there are approximately 370 employees returning to Canada; 60 percent of whom who are coming back to Eastern Ontario.

The Kandahar support staff will be fully demobilized by November 30 and the workers returning to Kingston are predominately warehouse technicians, mechanics, skilled trades persons, administrative, as well as many other specialized positions.

The Entrepreneurship Centre at KEDCO will be hosting the annual Regional Meeting of the Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation (MEDI) Entrepreneurship Branch at the Marriott Residence Inn Kingston, 7 Earl Street on November 16 – 17. Centre Managers from 17 locations will be in attendance as well as Ministry staff.

The focus of the meeting will be on resources for working with existing businesses with presentations by Shelagh MacDonald, Executive Director of ELORIN; Chris Puddicombe, MEDI Business Advisor; and Jan Dines, Manager of The Entrepreneurship Centre at KEDCO.

Tourism Kingston

Tourism Kingston is a proud sponsor of the upcoming 2011 OFSAA Girl’s AAA Basketball Championships set to take place on November 23-26, 2011. Hosted by Holy Cross Secondary School, the tournament will feature 16 senior girls basketball teams from across Ontario competing for the provincial high school championship with games at the Queen’s Athletics and Recreation Centre, Kingston Military Community Sports Centre and St. Lawrence College.
