HIGHLIGHTS OF RECENT PROGRESS & ACTIVITIES

Business Development

Jan Dines, Manager of the Entrepreneurship Centre at KEDCO was in Toronto on March 12 as a judge for the Regional Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) competition. SIFE is an international non-profit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders. The St. Lawrence College SIFE team was named regional champion for their initiatives in using green practices to make local food banks more sustainable.

Jeff Garrah, CEO and John-Paul Shearer, Director of Business Development were in Vancouver, BC on March 13-16 to attend the GLOBE 12th Biennial Conference and Trade Fair on Business and the Environment. Globe 2012 connects business leaders, policymakers and sustainability experts and focuses on exploring the issues and defining opportunities towards a sustainable future and untapped and emerging opportunities for advancing the business of the environment.

The Entrepreneurship Centre at KEDCO will be holding Summer Company Information Sessions on March 28 and April 4 at Innovation Park. The Summer Company Program is funded by the Government of Ontario and provides students between the ages of 15-29 years grants of up to $3,000 to start their own business. Tourism Kingston

Tickets for the Canada vs. USA Rugby Canada match will go on sale at 10:00 am Eastern Standard Time on Wednesday, March 21. The international test match will take place on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Richardson Stadium. This will be the first time that the Canadian National Senior Men’s Rugby team has been in Kingston since 2001. Tickets for this event can be purchased online by visiting http://www.kingstonrugby.ca in person at the Tourism Kingston Visitor Information Centre at 209 Ontario Street or by phone at 613-548-4415. Early bird savings will be available until April 30.

The Tourism Kingston Meeting and Conference Working Group is currently planning a Familiarization (FAM) tour of Kingston for City of Kingston Councillors and KEDCO Board Directors for Friday, June 8. The FAM tour will showcase visitor attractions in the city and allow for Councillors and board members to meet with sales representatives from local hotels and conference venues to discuss the current operating environment and future goals for the meeting and conference sector.
