HIGHLIGHTS OF RECENT PROGRESS & ACTIVITIES

Business Development

On December 5 Carey Bidtnes, Labour Market Consultant and Jan Dines, Business Development Officer attended the Workforce Development Projects and Partnerships 2013-2014 Community Consultation presented by the 1000 Islands Region Workforce Development Board.

The annual event brings together key stakeholders to develop community based projects to address workforce planning and labour market development in the 1000 Islands Region. This region encompasses the counties of Frontenac, Leeds & Grenville, and Loyalist Township.

The community consultation identified key priorities for the region as: the collection and dissemination of local labour force characteristics at the community level, closing the labour supply and demand gap through improving career education programs and opportunities in the region and, continued collaboration and information sharing between all stakeholders in the region including economic development organizations, government organizations, employment Ontario service providers, immigration partnerships, educational institutions and employers.

On November 30 Carey Bidtnes, Labour Market Consultant, presented at the Diversity Works Symposium. More than 120 people attended the symposium, including internationally educated professionals, employers, and community organizations. Bidtnes delivered a workshop to 65 participants on labour market and employment trends in the city of Kingston. Each week, the city of Kingston has more than 225 job opportunities from retail management to experienced engineers.

Tourism Kingston

Tourism Kingston’s Sport Tourism Working Committee met on December 4 at Innovation Park. The Sport Tourism Working Committee is a newly formed group of stakeholders who provide support, advice and assistance for sport tourism initiatives within the framework of Tourism Kingston’s sport tourism portfolio.

Tourism Kingston would like to welcome Committee Members Murray Matheson – Kingston Accommodation Partners, Luke Follwell – City of Kingston, Marianne Davis – CORK, Laura Meggs – Downtown Kingston! Business Improvement Area, Guy Dube – Royal Military College of Canada Athletics, Jeff Downie – Queen’s University Athletics and Recreation Centre and Jacqueline Bell – Tourism Kingston.
