HIGHLIGHTS OF RECENT PROGRESS & ACTIVITIES
Elizabeth Allen, Labour Market Development Project Manager attended the CFB Kingston Second Career Assessment Network (SCAN) seminar on April 19. SCAN provides support and resources for additional learning and information on career transition for retiring military personnel. The average age of retirement for military personnel is under the age of 40 years. KEDCO is providing support to CFB through Labour Market connections with local employers and through The Entrepreneurship Centre at KEDCO for individuals interested in starting their own business.
KEDCO hosted a meeting of local Commercial Real Estate Brokers on April 26. The meeting agenda included updates on municipal employment land inventory; general real estate market conditions and trends; available properties within Kingston for sale or lease that may be of interest to potential companies considering Kingston or expanding current locations. Discussion surrounding zoning challenges faced by businesses also took place, with plans for further review on improving processes with the City of Kingston Planning Committee.
A Health Care Sector Development Advisory Group is meeting on May 5. KEDCO has brought together various sector groups to create closer working relationships and better understand the challenges and opportunities within Kingston’s healthcare network.
Rob Carnegie, Director of Tourism Marketing & Development and Cory Quaresma, Sport Tourism Coordinator attended the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance’s conference in Ottawa from April 27-29. The annual Sport Events Congress provides networking and learning opportunities for event right holders, host communities and local sport organizations. Jeff Garrah, CEO joined Carnegie for a series of meetings and sales calls during the event.
The KEDCO AGM took place on April 25. The 2010 Financial Statements were accepted and the accounting firm of Secker, Ross and Perry were appointed to oversee the 2011 audit. Congratulations to Dean Byrnes, who was elected to the position of Co Vice-Chair; and to Jim Gibson who was elected as Secretary. Derek Winton continues as Chairman with Gord MacDougall, Co Vice-Chair and Debi Wells, Treasurer.
