John Counter Boulevard Closure for March 24 and 25

Published on: 2015/03/23 - in Releases

John Counter Boulevard will be closed from Portsmouth Avenue to Princess Street from 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 24 until 10 p.m. Wednesday, March 25.  Urgent repairs are needed to the culverts in this area. The VIA Rail station and area businesses can be accessed from John Counter Boulevard by way of Princess Street during this road closure.

“These urgent repairs to the culverts are necessary to support and maintain the road that runs over them,” says Jim Keech, CEO and president of Utilities Kingston.

Keech notes that this portion of John Counter Boulevard is going to be well-travelled this spring as the City of Kingston works to stabilize the wetlands around the railway tracks so that a bridge can be built over them.

“If you drive one of the more than 20,000 cars that go over the tracks every day, you need to be prepared for a lot more truck traffic along this stretch of John Counter Boulevard. The good news is that this ends with us having a bridge over the tracks,” says Keech.

This year’s work involves bringing in fill at a rate of a truckload every seven minutes over three months to build the bridge’s embankment.  For more information on this work, part of the larger project to widen John Counter Boulevard, see CityofKingston.ca/projects.
