RELEASE — The City of Kingston was one of dozens of communities affected by online technical issues during the final hours of voting.
“Voters in approximately 51 Ontario municipalities using Internet voting experienced difficulties with the system,” says Kay Stimson, vice president of government affairs for Dominion Voting Systems. “It is important to note that at no time was the integrity of the system at risk of compromise, or in any way insecure.”
The City of Kingston realized at approximately 5:45 p.m. that the Internet voting system was down. It was not restored until shortly after 8 p.m.
In efforts to provide the public with sufficient time to vote, the City Clerk extended the voting period until 9:15 p.m. at all in-person locations.
“We regret the technical issues that Internet voters experienced,” says John Bolognone, city clerk for the City of Kingston. “The most important aspect of the election is that the integrity of the process was maintained, and I confirm that.”
Unofficial numbers show nearly 13,000 people voted online in Kingston which is a jump of about 4,000 over 2014.
Dominion Voting Systems says it was was unaware of the technical issues until municipalities contacted them for assistance.
“Dominion regrets the challenges this caused for both election officials and voters alike in today’s elections. We appreciate the public’s patience in resolving this matter,” adds Stimson.
