Ernestown Secondary School Concert Band will welcome students of the Carbonear Collegiate Choir, from Carbonear, Newfoundland, May 8 to 13, for 5 days of cultural exchange, music and fun.

The 24 Newfoundland students and their three teacher/chaperones arrive at Ernestown Secondary School on May 8 at approximately 5:30 pm.  ESS will welcome their musical guests with a Bar-B-Q hosted by the ESS band parents and host families.

On Thursday, May 12 a combined concert with the ESS Band, Jazz Band and the Carbonear Choir will be held at ESS. It will be a LOT of fun – featuring traditional “Newfie” music, pop music, jazz and folk. The concert starts at 7 pm in the school’s cafetorium.

The exchange is sponsored by SEVEC, a federal agency of Culture and Recreation Canada that pays for the air fare part of the exchange for both groups.  The ESS Band members will travel back to Carbonear, NFLD May 23 to 30.  ESS Band members have raised more than $8000.00 toward hosting this musical and cultural exchange with Carbonear Collegiate. Students raised this incredible amount of money by Easter egg sales, soliciting donations from local community organizations and businesses, performances, a band practicing marathon, and working  20  x 8 hour work shifts at Burt?s Greenhouses as they prepared for their spring openings. Other Major Sponsors include Ontario Power Generation, Loyalist Township, The Limestone District School Board and Ernestown Secondary School.

While in the Limestone District, students will visit Fort Henry, join the haunted walk, and perform at local schools. They will even spend a part of their time in regular academic classes at Ernestown Secondary School.
