A draft report on the City of Kingston’s commercial land review will be presented at a public open house from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 7 at the INVISTA Centre, 1350 Gardiners Rd.
The public open house will begin with a 6 p.m. presentation by the consultant team of SGL Planning & Design Inc. and urbanMetrics inc. The public will be invited to ask questions following the presentation.
“The review determined that Kingston has a sufficient supply of commercial lands to satisfy market demand over the next 25 years. The recommendations of the review speak to how commercial policies in the City’s Official Plan and regulatory controls in the Zoning Bylaw can be best updated to reflect current trends, such as the shift toward more intensive commercial formats and mixed-use development,” says Greg Newman, manager, policy planning.
The consultants have completed online and on-street public surveys and a supply and demand analysis of Kingston’s commercial land. The study also takes into consideration population growth, spending patterns and current trends in the retail industry.
Where appropriate, the recommendations of the review will be implemented through an Official Plan amendment – distinct from the ongoing Official Plan Update – and new standards will be considered through the Comprehensive the Zoning Bylaw, which is scheduled to be worked on in 2016 and 2017.
