Kingston’s Canada Day Celebrations and Closures Announced

Kingston’s Canada Day celebrations are scheduled for Confederation Park and Grass Creek Park this Sunday.

Kingstonians will also be interested in historical re-enactments of the War of 1812 on the St. Lawrence to take place over the weekend (full details at http://celebrate1812.ca).

Here’s what is going on Canada Day, Sunday, July 1:

Red & White People Parade: Anyone wearing Canadian red and white is welcome to join this parade which departs from the Metro parking lot (at Barrie and Princess Streets) at 11:30 a.m. and runs down Princess Street toward City Hall.

Confederation Park: directly across from City Hall, 216 Ontario St.

Registration for the Limestone Mile begins at 7:45 a.m. with races starting at 8:30 a.m.

At 12 p.m. on the steps of City Hall Mayor Mark Gerretsen will preside over a civic ceremony to mark Canada Day and will congratulate the winners of the First Capital Distinguished Citizen Honourable Achievement Awards – Ann St. Denis and Cindy Mills – and the Mayor’s Award for Youth Volunteerism winners Prerna Babbar (Grade 9 to 12 category) and Devon Cobb (Grade 5 to 8 category).

At 1 p.m. watch a re-enactment of the Flight of the Royal George in Kingston Harbour (see http://celebrate1812.ca for viewing details).

Enjoy live music in Confederation Park all afternoon. Fireworks start at 10 p.m. Confederation Basin will offer the best view of the show.

Grass Creek Park: 2991 Highway 2 East, 16 km from Fort Henry

Grass Creek Park is offering FREE music, face-painting, air castles, games, beach volleyball and lots of other fun for kids from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bring a swimsuit and try out the sandy beach or compete in the sand castle competition.

Bring a lawn chair and a sunhat to enjoy Grass Creek Park’s family-oriented live entertainment from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. – including Mystic Drums, Rob Driscoll’s Magic Show, Roger James, Rob Carnegie and Whiskey Overdrive.

At 5:30 p.m. the festivities wrap-up with a Canada Day Ceremony – and the cutting of the cake.

MONDAY HOLIDAY CLOSURES

As Canada Day is on a Sunday this year, the civic holiday is on Monday, July 2.

Administrative Offices: All administrative offices, including social services, housing, provincial offences and Utilities Kingston are closed Monday. In the event of a utility emergency, such as a gas smell or a water main break, call Utilities Kingston (24-hours) at 613-546-1181.

Kingston Transit: All buses will run on a Sunday schedule on Canada Day and Monday – except for Route 18, which runs on a regular schedule on Monday until 8:15 p.m., finishing at St. Lawrence College. This change has been made to accommodate VIA Rail’s schedule. Plan your Canada Day trips at www.cityofkingston.ca/tripplanner.

Garbage, Green Bin and recycling: No collection on Monday and collection moves to the day after your normal pick-up day for the rest of the week.

Kingston Area Recycling Centre: Closed Monday.

Artillery Park Aquatic & Fitness Centre: Now closed for renovation.

Outdoor Aquatic Centre: Open.

Splash Pads and Wading Pools: Splash Pads and wading pools are open on Monday. McBurney and Victoria Park wading pools open for the season on July 1.

Arenas: All municipal arenas are closed – except for the INVISTA Centre. The Fitness & Wellness Centre at the INVISTA Centre is also closed.

CaraCo Home Field: Open for booked users Monday.

Wally Elmer Neighbourhood Centre: Closed Monday.

Libraries: All branches of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library will be closed.

Portsmouth Olympic Harbour: Closed Monday.

Grand Theatre Box Office: Closed Monday.

Oakwood Day Care: Closed Monday.
