Kingston’s One Roof Youth Services Hub named Family Advocacy Award winner for 2018 by Family and Children’s Services

One Roof, a new youth services centre in Kingston, has been awarded the 2018 Family Advocacy Award – the highest award given by Family and Children’s Services or Frontenac, Lennox and Addington.

The award, held every year to celebrate Family Day, recognizes an individual, group or organization for their contribution in making the lives of families in KFL&A better. The 123 year old Children’s Aid Society recognized One Roof for their outstanding work with the youth of Kingston.

Every family knows that the needs of youth are unique. But it’s more than just the need for specialized services. It’s about listening to young people and empowering them. One Roof does exactly that. It took a long time and plenty of hard work to make One Roof happen, but now that it is here it is hard to imagine how we ever did without it. It’s that powerful an idea.

Run by Home Base Housing, One Roof is a youth hub offering services including mental health support, addiction services, housing assistance, educational services and family support.

It opened in November 2017, after three years in development. It supports young people aged 16 to 24. The initiative is funded by the Government of Canada, the United Way of KFLA and other donors.

“It takes a cooperative approach by government, business and agency leaders to make these good things happen. Staff, youth and volunteers have worked hard on behalf of the young people in our community and are looking forward to ensuring that our communities youth get the assistance they need and deserve,” saysTom Greening, Executive Director, Home Base Housing.

One Roof involves a number of organizations, including Youth Diversion, Resolve Counselling Services, Girls Inc. Keys Job Centre, Kingston Community Health Centres, St. Lawrence Youth Association, Youth Hab, Addiction and Mental Health Services, The Maltby Centre, Providence Care, Y2K, Katarokwi Learning Centre, Metis Nation of Ontario, HIV/AIDS Regional Services and ReStart. Family and Children’s Services is also a member of the One Roof partnership.

One Roof is the perfect example of community partnership that helps families. That’s why we’ve recognized thei work with this award. We’re proud to be associated with them.

Kelly Edwards was the runner-up in this year’s award. She was nominated for her outstanding work as a kin parent – taking her nephew into her care and raising him with courage and commitment that truly represent what being a family is all about.

Seventeen people and organizations and individuals were nominated in total. Past winners of the Family Advocacy Award include the Kingston Immigration Partnership, Lennox and Addington Interval House, Maribeth Scott from Northern Frontenac Community Services and the Newburgh Community Christmas Concert.
