Family and Children’s Services of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington posted the following release requesting the public’s help during Child Abuse Prevention Month

We’ve been protecting children from abuse and neglect in this community for 123 years. We’ve had many successes. Most of them have come because of the support we’ve received from people like you. Thank you. But even though we have done so much to help kids and families, the problem of abuse and neglect still remains.

Why?

After more than a century of effort, it may seem to some that this there is no solution to this problem. But that is incorrect. There is a solution. We know how to stop it. The problem is that we can’t do it alone.

Let us explain. The three main issues why Children’s Aid Societies get involved with a family are well known – domestic violence, mental health issues and addiction. But if you look carefully, you’ll notice that these not just Children’s Aid issues. They are also the same issues for many other social service and government agencies. In fact, we share many of the same clients with our community partners. What it means is that the work we do is only a small window on a much larger problem. If we want to stop child abuse and neglect, we have to do something about domestic violence, mental health issues and addiction. That’s something we at our Agency can’t do all by ourselves. It requires a community effort.

And that’s where you come in. We need your help. There are things you can do right now to support our work.

  1. Foster. We need foster homes, especially for teens and kids with special needs. Think about applying, or tell people you know. It’s not for everyone, but there’s no better way to help the kids we serve than to be their foster parent.
  2. Donate. We rely on donations to help the kids we serve with bursaries for college and university or toys, food and clothes at Christmas. We’ve identified gaps in government funding that we can fill with donations from people just like you.
  3. Know. It takes a village to keep kids safe. There are things you need to know about the work we do and about how we can make a difference if we all work together. Call us if you see a family in need. Go to our website to learn more. Watch one of our 200 videos online. Follow us on social media.

We’ve been marking Child Abuse Prevention Month for many years. We’re grateful for your support. But this year, let’s do something different. Let’s take action. Let’s End child abuse and neglect in Ontario.
