Total Open Air Burn Ban Issued Due to Fire Hazard Risk

Published on: 2018/07/18 - in News

As a result of recent dry conditions in the region, Kingston Fire & Rescue has issued a total ban on open air burning, including campfires, agricultural burns and brush burn piles.

Fireworks, flying lanterns, contained fires or open flames are also considered open air burning and prohibited during this fire ban. The only exemption is preparing meals on a propane or natural gas barbecue.

The ban is effective immediately and applies to all Kingston properties until further notice. Fines of up to $50,000 may be levied on violators along with costs associated with putting the fire out.

“Once again, the forecast shows dry conditions for next while, with little precipitation predicted for the area, so there is a higher risk of fire,” Chief Fire Prevention Officer Ted Posadowski said in a release.

The City states Kingston Fire & Rescue will continue to update the status of this total open air burn ban as weather conditions and fire risk change.
