The City of Kingston has announced the results of its public vote to choose which lyric from a Hip song will be displayed on a commemorative stone in Springer Market Square.

“August 20, The Tragically Hip Day in Kingston, is a night Kingstonians and Canadians will always remember,” said Mayor Bryan Paterson. “Thank you to all those who voted on the lyric to be displayed on the commemorative stone, a physical showcase of our pride and love for our iconic hometown boys.”

With a total of 11,280 votes cast – 3,580 of them local voters – “Everybody was in it from miles around” from Blow at High Dough was the winning choice with 7,982 votes (2,710 local). The alternate lyric, “We danced the sidewalk clean” from New Orleans is Sinking, received 3,300 votes (370 local).

City staff will now consult with the First Capital Place Advisory Committee to determine the material, design and location of the commemorative stone in the Square.

The stone will read:

“Everybody was in it from miles around…”
