School Board Releases Statement About School Lockdown
The Limestone District School Board addressed Thursday’s lockdown & hold and secure at local schools by issuing the following article on its website (*update below):
All students & staff are safe following Lockdown & Hold and Secure earlier today
All students and staff are safe at schools affected earlier today by the initiation of Lockdown and Hold and Secure procedures.
Just after 1 p.m. today, Sydenham High School was placed in a Lockdown, and Loughborough Public School, which is adjacent, was placed in a Hold & Secure after being notified by the Ontario Provincial Police of a potential threat external to the school.
A short time later, Yarker Public School was also placed in a Hold & Secure. School staff at both sites immediately took all safety precautions to ensure the safety of our students and staff.
Police were on site for the duration of these emergency procedures, which lasted just over one hour. After determining there was no longer a threat to students and staff, the emergency procedures were lifted by police.
During a lockdown, students and staff stay locked in the rooms in which they are located. No one is allowed in or out of the building. During a Hold & Secure, students and staff stay locked inside the school. Normal activities continue. No one is allowed in or out of the building.
Letters were beings sent home with families this afternoon regarding the emergency procedures.
We want to assure you that our schools continues to be a safe, secure learning environment for your children.
Further inquiries should be directed to the Ontario Provincial Police, who are investigating.
UPDATE: Jeffrey Reeves, 54, has been charged with uttering threats and unsafe storage of a firearm in connection with this incident.
