Residence Move-In Weekend for Queen’s Students
This Saturday, September 4th is the big day for many new students in Kingston. Nearly 4,000 first-year students will be preparing to move into Queen’s student Residences on that day. Due to the substantial increase in traffic this move will cause, area streets around both the main and west campus will be re-routed.
Students and parents have been updated on a regular basis since June. In addition to sending out weekly news emails, the university has also been hosting a Facebook group to keep all involved parties in changing updates. A monthly newsletter was also distributed to parents in order to prepare them for the big event.
Commenting on the first-year students moving into the university residences, Manager of Residence Admissions Micheline Boomhour said “It’s going to be a very busy day on campus. Over 90 per cent of first-year students choose to live in residence, so we’ll be seeing lots of new faces.”
It has been a busy summer for staff at the Residences as well. To ensure that move-in day goes along as smoothly as possible, staff of the residence have been preparing bedrooms and answering a myriad of questions from students and parents. Upper-year students have also been asked to help with directions and to greet new students and families as they arrive.
To accommodate the expected increase in traffic on the day itself, streets around the residences will be re-routed as one-way on Saturday. The affected streets as well as area maps can be obtained from the residence’s website at: http://housing.queensu.ca/residences/movingintoresidence.asp .
Parents will be able to attend information sessions on the day itself and be able to ask questions at the parent booth. In addition to that, they will have the opportunity to fill the students’ fridges at a special on-site store. A complimentary brunch will also be provided to students and parents at each of the 3 campus dining halls.
Manager of Residence Admissions, Micheline Boomhour said “Students tell us that their residence community is a big part of the university experience. We’re looking forward to welcoming them home.”
