Loving Spoonful Fundraising Goal Surpassed & Collects Over 47,000 lbs of Food

Local charity Loving Spoonful has reported that in 2014, they collected over 47,000 lbs of healthy, perishable food that was delivered to 25 Kingston locations that serve people in need.

According to the organization, every pound of food reclaimed provides the healthy food that creates one meal that was distributed to shelters, meal programs, drop-in centres and pantries.

“Each one of us needs healthy food to thrive.” said Executive Director of Loving Spoonful, Mara Shaw. “We are so grateful for all of the community support we received. Being able to reclaim 47,000 pounds of fresh, perishable food and deliver it directly to shelters, meal programs and drop-in centres has created tens of thousands of healthy meals and snacks for those most in need in our community. We thank the restaurants, caterers, bakeries, farmers, farmers market vendors and individual gardeners who donate food and the many individuals and companies that donate financially to make it possible to coordinate!”

Loving Spoonful also expressed its gratitude to the Kingston community for helping it exceed their December fundraising goal, where it raised $12,700 to create 12,700 meals for local agencies serving the Kingston community.

Throughout the year, Loving Spoonful volunteers pick up fresh perishable food daily from local farmers, gardeners, restaurants, and grocers. The food is then immediately delivered to shelters, drop-in programs, and hot meal programs. These deliveries enable service providers in Kingston to mitigate food budgets, allowing their limited resources to strech further.

The Executive Director of the Kingston Youth Shelter, Jason Beaubiah, expressed his appreciation for the program. In a release, Beaubiah said “Loving Spoonful brings us nutritional, seasonal produce that, without their support, we would be unable to offer our residents in the variety or quantity we do.”
