City Seeks Public Input for Proposed “Tragically Hip Way”

The City of Kingston is seeking the public’s input on a proposal to rename the foot of Barrack Street, or another public asset in the North Block, to show recognition and appreciation for the Tragically Hip and their place in our community.
On Wednesday January 18 at 7:00 pm, a public meeting will be held to discuss the matter in Memorial Hall, City Hall, 216 Ontario Street.
The primary two opportunities for recognition of the band that are being considered include renaming Barrack Street between King Street and Ontario Street, either permanently or with an additional honorary name as Tragically Hip Way, or to name a public asset in the redeveloped North Block – the area bordered approximately by Wellington Street, Place D’Armes, Ontario Street and Queen Street.
This meeting is to be attended by members of Kingston City Council & City staff and will be chaired by Mayor Mark Gerretsen with the presentation beginning at 7:15 pm.
Any member of the public who would like to speak after the presentation should register at the welcome table prior to the start of the meeting. Those speakers will be chosen in random order and each allocated a maximum of five minutes to make their own presentation.
Kingston residents may also offer feedback on the ‘Your Opinion’ survey at www.cityofkingston.ca/tragicallyhip until January 20, 2012.
All feedback that is received at the public meeting and the online survey will be considered when a staff report on this initiative is completed in early 2012.
