On Friday, the Kingston Flying Club announced that they have been certified as the city’s newest career college under the Ontario Colleges Act. To obtain this accreditation, the club has been working with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities for the past year.

“This is a great day for the Kingston Flying Club and a great day for Kingston,” said President of the Club, Dave Barton. “Effective immediately we can offer prospective pilots the opportunity to build a full commercial career in the airline industry right here in Kingston.”

Tony Tiefenbach, the club’s Chief Flight Instructor, added, “I worked in Ottawa for many years as a flight instructor and found that many students drove in from Kingston and surrounding areas to undergo training. When I moved to Kingston last year and saw the quality, history and reputation of the Kingston Flying Club, I just knew it would be a wonderful opportunity to create a Flight College where people could do everything from introductory flights all the way to obtain a commercial pilot license or Airline Transport Pilot License.”

Since it was founded more than 82 years ago, the Kingston Flying Club’s primary objective has been the advancement of aviation through flight training. And the club has distinguished itself as South-eastern Ontario’s premier commercial flight training centre, in part, due to its training of WW II pilots through to the military’s CF-18 pilots of today.

“We are proud to see the Kingston Flying Club receive this new accreditation.  Kingston has long been recognized for its excellence in aviation and today’s announcement adds another exciting element to our educational landscape,” said Jeff Garrah, CEO for the Kingston Economic Development Corporation.

The Kingston Flying Club became one of the founding and longest standing members of the Royal Canadian Flying Club Association, having received its initial charter in 1929.

According to a media release, the club provides training programs which include Recreational Licenses such as the Recreational Pilot Permit and Private Pilot License;  developmental courses for additional licenses and endorsements such as night rating, VFR over-the-top rating, Instrument rating; and now a  Flight Instructor rating and Commercial Pilot Program, all aimed at educating and supporting prospective pilots in achieving their goals.
