Break Out Your Bicycle for Cycle Sunday, September 29

Winter may be coming, but that can’t stop cycling enthusiasts from enjoying the ride anyway, and Sunday September 29th will be all about showing your love for cycling at Cycle Sunday.

The City of Kingston has partnered up with KFL&A Public Health, the Kingston Coalition for Active Transportation, and Cycle Kingston to host the half day event in an effort to celebrate cycling and encourage residents to be more active and choose eco-transportation for the future.

You can join in the fun by enjoying a 7 km ride down King Street and Front Road streets between the hours of 9am and 1pm.

And you won’t need to worry about traffic – the two westbound lanes on Front Road and King Street, between Portsmouth Avenue and Days Road, will be closed to keep things safe for all cyclists.

Events, activities, and entertainment will also be widely available. Lake Ontario Park will be all decked out for the event and participants will find plenty of food vendors, cycling vendors, active transportation displays, cycling displays, educational displays, bicycle tune up stations, live entertainment and more.

“Kingston has been recognized for our growing cycling infrastructure and efforts to promote cycling both recreationally and as a form of transportation,” said Mayor Mark Gerretsen. Referring to the Cycle Kingston Skills Course, being held at Centre 70 at Days and Front Roads, the Mayor added “Cycle Sunday is a great new event with activities for the whole family. I’m looking forward to the skills course to get some tips on hand signals.”

Lesley Kimble, Special Events Coordinator for Cycle Sunday, described the event as an opportunity for “families to enjoy a Sunday ride together” while also being perfect for veteran cyclists, newbies, and individuals who just want to get out and ride on a safe course.

Early birds who don’t have a bicycle can rent one for Cycle Sunday at Lake Ontario Park on a first- come, first-served basis. For more information go to CityofKingston.ca/cyclesunday.
