Local Firefighters Raise $10,500 for Fort McMurray Residents

This past Friday, the City reported Kingston and area firefighters have raised $10,500 in donations for the Canadian Red Cross in support of Fort McMurray residents who were displaced or lost their homes in the fires.

Almost $7,000 of that amount raised came from donations from the public during last week’s Fire Station open houses last Tuesday and Wednesday.

About that event, Mayor Bryan Paterson said: “Our hearts go out to those who have had to leave their homes in Fort McMurray – and to those tirelessly fighting the fire. We know Kingstonians are concerned for them and will come out to meet our firefighters and offer a donation.”

To date, an additional $3,500 has been donated by the firefighters from the Kingston Frontenac Lennox and Addington Mutual Aid Association.

“We are really touched by the generosity of the community,” said says Fire Chief Shawn Armstrong. “It’s an awesome community we live in. That’s just how much has been donated in the last three days. We are working to plan other efforts which we will announce once we are further along.”

Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington firefighters are now considering similar drives in their communities.
