The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority has issued the following statement regarding the death of Board member, Councillor Doug Good:

General Manager/Secretary Treasurer Geoff Rae, on behalf of the board of directors and staff of the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority (CRCA), wishes to acknowledge the tragic and sudden death of Councillor Doug Good this past weekend.

Councillor Good has represented the Township of Rideau Lakes on the CRCA board since 2015 and has been a very active and valued member, serving on the Budget Committee from 2015 to 2016, on the Workplan Ad Hoc Committee throughout 2016 and was also on the Rideau Corridor Strategy Steering Committee in 2016.

A well-known, passionate and devoted advocate for the Cataraqui Trail, Councillor Good served on the Cataraqui Trail Management Board since 2011, serving as its chairperson from 2015 to 2016. At the management board’s most recent meeting on Feb. 23, 2017, he was once again elected chairperson for the forthcoming year.

“Anyone who has met Doug knows that he is truly dedicated to the work being done by staff, board and volunteers of the Cataraqui Trail and the CRCA. As a tireless volunteer, he brought an energy, passion and good humour to his work, and was an individual who just knew how to get things done. He is going to be missed by everyone associated with both the Cataraqui Trail and the CRCA,” said Tom Beaubiah, Conservation Lands Lead for the CRCA, the staff member who worked most frequently, closely and directly with Councillor Good.

“Those of us at the CRCA who have worked with Doug, and those who have benefitted from his hard work, leadership and stewardship of both the Cataraqui Trail and the CRCA, are saddened to hear of his passing. We express our most sincere condolences to Doug’s family, many friends and colleagues, who are undoubtedly going through a difficult time,” added Geoff Rae.

The bodies of Rideau Lakes Councillor Doug Good and his friend, retired farmer Michael Carty, were recovered from Big Rideau Lake Sunday night after a weekend search.

Rideau Lakes Mayor Ron Holman said in a statment: “The Township’s Council and staff and the wider Rideau Lakes community are shocked and deeply saddened by the untimely loss of Councillor Doug Good and Mike Carty. They were both dedicated community champions, both greatly respected by their peers and neighbours.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends at this difficult time.

The two friends were thought to have been heading to Cow Island on Big Rideau Lake when their truck went through the ice, according to OPP Constable Janice Sawbridge.

A coroner’s investigation is being conducted.
