An information session to inform the public on how to become a home-owner and learn about the City’s Home Ownership Program will be hosted this month by the City of Kingston and the Canadian Mortgage & Housing Corporation (CMHC).

“This is another affordable housing initiative. Down payment assistance can provide an affordable option for households interested in home ownership. This information session and the City’s Home Ownership program are aimed at helping people find an affordable way into the housing market,” said the Commissioner of Community Services, Lanie Hurdle.

Hurdle also stated that the CMHC will be providing information about the responsibilities and financial requirements related to owning a home and that may benefit a prospective homeowner.

This information session will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. in the Isabel Turner Branch of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library located at 935 Gardiners Road. (map)

Renters residing in Kingston or the County of Frontenac who are interested in purchasing a home for a maximum price of $260,000, and who who have a household income under $74,900, may be eligible for down payment assistance equal to 5 per cent of the home purchase price up to $13,000.

Interested parties are advised to read the Home Ownership Program fact sheet for the complete list of rules and eligibility requirements. It also includes an application which outlines the information and documentation that will need to be submitted.

Both are available online at CityofKingston.ca/housing or the second floor reception at 362 Montreal Street. (map)

Applications for the Home Ownership Program will be accepted beginning Monday March 3, 2014 until 4:30 p.m. on Friday March 14, 2014.
