Bombardier Transportation, along with two consortium partners, have announced receipt of an order to supply, design and install a 24 kilometer BOMBARDIER INNOVIA Monorail 300 system in São Paulo, Brazil.

Engineering, design and testing for these new Monorail vehicles will take place at the Bombardier facilities here in Kingston.

The initial cars will be manufactured by Bombardier in Pittsburgh, USA, with the remaining cars built in Brazil at Bombardier’s site in Hortolândia. The system is expected to begin passenger service by 2014.

The total value of the contract is $1.44 billion U.S. with Bombardier’s share of the contract worth $816 million U.S.

This new monorail line – named “Expresso Tiradentes” – will be an extension of the São Paulo Metro Line 2, with the capacity to serve 40,000 passengers per hour per direction between the Vila Prudente and Cidade Tiradentes.

This trip now takes almost two hours while the new system will reduce the journey time for its half million daily users to approximately 50 minutes.

André Navarri, President and COO of Bombardier Transportation, commented on this contract by saying: “To be selected by São Paulo Metro as the Monorail system supplier for the Expresso Tiradentes project is a great privilege. The introduction of our INNOVIA Monorail 300 system to this great city will increase mobility for citizens, reduce congestion, and benefit the local economy as well as the environment.” adding: “Our investment in local manufacturing is a key element in our project delivery plan and essential for Bombardier’s long-term participation in Brazil’s fast growing railway market.”

President Systems Division of Bombardier Transportation, Eran Gartner, commented by saying, “Our new INNOVIA Monorail 300 system for Sao Paulo is a game changer in the industry, as it allows fast construction of high capacity transit lines. With its advanced technology, the new system will dramatically improve the quality of life for thousands of residents by halving their daily commuting time and with its attractive aerodynamic design, the INNOVIA Monorail is set to become an iconic image on the São Paulo skyline.”

Bombardier has supplied four other fully automated Monorail systems – Tampa, Newark, Jacksonville and Las Vegas – and currently supplying the INNOVIA Monorail 300 system to Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
