Rob Baker, guitarist for Canadian band “The Tragically Hip”, was named as one of the donors for new music libraries used by two local schools.

Through community donations totaling $53,000, students from Frontenac and Winston Churchill public schools have been able to partner together to cultivate an appreciation for music.

The Winston Churchill PS music program was started three years ago, but cost issues often prevented students from being able to play their first choice of instruments.

Both Frontenac and Winston Churchill school band members showed their appreciation for the donations by holding a concert recently at Frontenac Public School, attended by local donors including Rob Baker who represented the Hip’s contribution to this charity.

The Kingston This Week newspaper interviewed a Winston Churchill P.S. parent volunteer, Nancy Druick, who said she understands and appreciates the relationship between musical education and improved student outcomes, and the many benefits music brings to the lives of students.

Druick also said she saw an opportunity to bring the pure joy one experiences playing music back into the school for students “who may not have had the experience otherwise.”

The organizers hope to raise another $15,000 in the near future to allow the purchase of some additional, larger instruments.

The Tragically Hip – often referred to as “The Hip” – is a Canadian rock band from Kingston, Ontario that formed in 1983.
