This year, Queen’s University Musical Theatre winter production will be returning to the Golden Age of Hollywood with the comedic drama “City of Angels”.
City of Angels first opened at New York City’s Virginia Theatre in December 1989, and featured over 900 performances in its 4 year run on Broadway. In 1990, the musical collected not only eight Drama Desk Awards, but also six Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Musical Score.
The musical is a spoof on the 1940s detective movies and follows Stein, a fiction novelist, as he endures the trials and tribulations of converting his novel into a script worthy of the Hollywood screen. Two interweaving plots, contemporary jazz idioms, and side-splitting humour are all a part of what captivates audiences, always leaving them wanting more.
With a book by Larry Gelbart (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum), and music by Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity and Come Fly Away), this phenomenal musical is a guaranteed hit.
Queen’s University’s outstanding cast will be performing City of Angels at the Rotunda Theatre in Theological Hall [map].
Be prepared to be transported back to the age of film noir mystery and old Hollywood style. This musical features an upbeat, comedic score with classic tunes that include “What You Don’t Know About Women!” and “You’re Nothing Without Me”.
Queen’s Musical Theatre has been an entirely student-run organization for over forty years, and stages two professional-quality productions each year. They aim to provide an environment at Queen’s conducive to positive learning experiences for students within a framework of a working theatre company.
