Musical “Punk Rock Girl” Set to Feature Hits by Avril Lavigne

A newly announced stage musical will feature songs by female singers and musicians that reportedly include locally raised singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne.

One or more songs by Lavigne, who grew up in nearby Napanee, will be incorporated into Joe Iconis’ upcoming musical “Punk Rock Girl” along with tunes from Pat Benatar, Blondie, Pink, Bikini Kill, Echosmith, TraLaLa, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

According to a release, the musical will follow 16-year-old Angela Quivers, “a perfectionist who never takes chances and feels like there’s no place where she belongs until she meets Proxi, a teenager who pulls her into a world of grungy guitars, shocking secrets, and big, loud, messy emotions.”. The title song will be The Dead Milkmen‘s 1988 tune by the same name.

Composer Joe Iconis is writing the “Punk Rock Girl” book and musical arrangements. His Off Broadway viral hit “Be More Chill” is scheduled to open on Broadway in February and later to be adapted into a major motion picture.

“In punk music, you don’t have to be the most talented musician, the best singer, or the most beautiful rock star,” said Iconis in a media release. “The point of punk is that its music for everyone – it’s a party for people who aren’t polished, who aren’t perfect. It’s about finding your passion and not being ashamed of your inner weirdo. This lovingly-trashy show explores serious issues in an occasionally fantastical, often explosive, always heartfelt way.”

Worldwide, Lavigne has sold over 40 million albums and more than 50 million singles. Her sixth album will be available on February 15, 2019 and two singles with accompanying music videos have been released: “Head Above Water” and “Tell Me It’s Over“.

Avril will be performing ‘Tell Me It’s Over” with Ryan Cabrera LIVE on Facebook and Youtube this evening (Dec 20) at 10pm EST / 7pm PT with all proceeds raised going to the Avril Lavigne Foundation:

The “Punk Rock Girl” announcement was made this week by Lively McCabe Entertainment in collaboration with BMG and R&H Theatricals.
