Haitian Star to Perform at Monte’s for Local Charity

Local musician TRUX and Haitian roots artist Scraggy (pictured left) will be performing this Thursday, April 3 at Monte’s in Kingston. The event is a fundraiser for the local charity “Helping Haiti”.

TRUX is well known in the Kingston area; he has fronted bands locally before setting out on his own. Well known for energetic and perfectly performed covers of famous songs, TRUX will be performing original songs on April 3, as well as covers.

Scraggy is a popular musician in his homeland, specialising in Haitian roots music.

Haitian roots music, or mizik rasin in Creole, incorporates reggae, rock, and funk elements into more traditional Haitian music. Scraggy will be in Kingston and looking forward to performing at Monte’s.

Founded by Kingston’s Tammy Babcock, Helping Haiti focuses on sustainable help to Cite Soleil, the poorest area of Haiti’s capital city Port-au-Prince. 100% of the money raised from the show will go towards Helping Haiti’s work.

Previously, Helping Haiti built a water tower to provide safe drinking water at cost to all the people of the area. Helping Haiti has also built a medical clinic and training facility and is now working on raising money to bring a pediatric doctor to the clinic once a week to combat high infant mortality rates in the area. The medical clinic is ideally located for all the people of Cite Soleil.

The charity has been using the training facility for training violent youth in ‘First Aid for Peace’ and young mothers on infant first aid.

Helping Haiti is also currently working on building the Pivot Point Community Centre. This community centre would be a safe place for all the people of Cite Soleil to study trades and skills as well as play sports.

“I’m very excited for the show on Thursday,” Babcock said. “It features locals and international people working together to enrich the city of Kingston for the betterment of Cite Soleil.”

The show begins at 8 PM on Thursday, April 3rd. Admission is by a donation of your choice at the door.

Monte’s is off Ontario Street, in the same building as Tir Nan Og Irish Pub at 200 Ontario Street (map). Seating is very limited so come early to get a good one!
