According to the website TVwise, the Universal Channel has acquired the UK broadcast rights to the first season of “Flashpoint” – the Canadian police drama series starring Kingston’s Hugh Dillon as sniper Ed Lane.

The Universal Channel begins airing the first season of the show next Monday, March 19 at 8pm. In Canada, the fourth season recently concluded and production has begun for its fifth year on the CTV network.

The Gemini Award winning Flashpoint follows the missions of Toronto’s Strategic Response Unit, a tactical police squad inspired by the city’s actual Emergency Task Force.

The series recently finished airing its fourth season on CTV in Canada and a fifth season has been ordered by the network.

In the United States, the cable network ION Television announced earlier this year that it had also renewed Flashpoint for a fifth season. It had launched the series with episode 1 last October, and went on to air the following two seasons and 11 episodes of season four.

On December 27, the show earned the network’s highest-telecast ever among the its key demographics.

Hugh Dillon, who was born and raised in Kingston, is also the lead singer of the hard rock band “The Headstones”. The group formed in Kingston in 1987 and was one of Canada’s most successful bands until their breakup in 2003.

The original band members reunited for 4 shows in February 2011 and played 8 shows together this past December.
