The 26th annual Gemini Award nominations were announced this week and Toronto-based police drama ‘Flashpoint’ received the most nods of any series.

The show was honored with 17 nominations, including best dramatic series going up against ‘Endgame’, ‘Skins’, ‘The Borgias’, and ‘The Tudors’.

Flashpoint’s ensemble cast includes Head SRU (Strategic Response Unit) sniper Ed Lane, portrayed by Kingston-born actor Hugh Dillon. The actor is also the lead singer for The Headstones, which formed in Kingston in 1987 and was one of the country’s most successful bands until their breakup in 2003.

This year Flashpoint is followed in Gemini nominations by HBO Canada’s dark comedy ‘Call Me Fitz’. with 16 nominations, and a three-way tie for 10 nominations for Comedy Central’s ‘Living in Your Car’, History Channel’s ‘The Kennedys’ and TMN’s ‘The Pillars of the Earth’.

Another Flashpoint related Gemini nomination was received in the category “Best Cross-Platform Project – Fiction (Sponsored by the Canada Media Fund)”, for the online interactive game “Flashpoint Training Day”.

The interactive game was hosted on CTV’s website here, but as of this posting it appears to be no longer available (although the game’s main page is still online).

For additional information, check out the “Flashpoint Training Day” case study posted by Uproot, who partnered with Xenophile Media to create this game for the hit TV series.

Last year, Flashpoint was nominated in multiple categories and won a Gemini Award for Best Direction in a Dramatic Series.  It also ranked #2 in the top 25 Canadian shows of all time, as voted on by TV lovers across Canada, and Hugh Dillon’s series Durham County came in fifth place.

The singer-actor was previously nominated for a Gemini award in 2008 for his work on Durham County and a Genie award in 2007 for his role in the movie Trailer Park Boys.

The 2011 Gemini Awards takes place in Toronto on September 7 and will air on CBC.  To see a list of all the nominations, view this pdf document post at geminiawards.com.
